About this Episode.  Many of you already know Jackie from her work with CRS and FTRN (the Fair Trade Resource Network) before that.  She is endlessly knowledgeable about Fair Trade (did I mention she wrote the book on Fair Trade?)  and deeply passionate about her work — two things that come across loud and clear in this interview.

Chris and his wife Jody started Higher Grounds after living and working in Chiapas and getting acquainted with the political economy of coffee.  Since then they have been tireless not only in their support for coffee coops overseas, but also in the work to educate U.S. consumers about Fair Trade.  Jody and Chris participate in the Green Festivals, the United Students for Fair Trade Convergences, Bioneers events and other domestic gathering to help folks in the United States tap into their power as consumers to make choices that uplift others.

They also bring U.S. consumers into direct contact with producers overseas — they have already led Fair Trade Tours to Mexico, Ethiopia and Kenya in 2007 and have more planned in the coming months.  Chris also happens to be one of the leading young voices for Fair Trade in the United States; as a Jesuit-educated dude he also “gets” what Catholic organizations like Provoke and CRS, committed to social justice and change, are working to achieve in the world.

With guests like these, and thoughtful hosts and producers at Provoke Radio, it’s no wonder the episode is so strong…

Provocative Radio.  From my perspective, Provoke Radio is one of the best sources of thoughtful commentary and analysis from a Catholic perspective on the biggest and most pressing justice issues of our time — the ones it is all too easy to shy away from because they are so enormous but the ones that demand our attention and action as people of faith.  Issues like World Peace (episode 6), The Invisible Poor in America (episodes 20-21), Darfur (episode 24), Human Trafficking (episode 25), Muslim Christian Understanding (episode 41), Global Warming (episode 43) and Eradicating Global Poverty (episode 53).  Check out the Provoke Archives for more enlightenment.
