Equal Exchange to Join Coffee Program!

 

 

 

 

Great news!  Equal Exchange will be joining our Coffee Program on October 1! 

For those of you who don’t know “EE,” it is our pleasure to help acquaint you.  EE is a:

• Worker-owned cooperative.
• Fair Trade pioneer.  The coop was established in 1986 when few people in the United States were talking about Fair Trade, developed an innovative  Interfaith Program that partners with diverse religious congregations to promote faith-based Fair Trade activism, and is leading the way today in developing the concept of domestic Fair Trade.
• Fair Trade leader.  CRS and our other Fair Trade partners have collaborated closely with EE in recent years to help expand the Fair Trade movement through co-sponsorship of important events like the Fair Trade Futures Conference and the United Students for Fair Trade’s annual Convergence event.

In addition to its full line of Fair Trade coffees, Equal Exchange works directly with farmer cooperatives overseas to offer its own lines of Fair Trade tea, chocolate bars, cocoa and sugar, and with farmer cooperatives in the United States to bring you Fair Trade almonds, pecans and cranberries.  Whew!  Quite a line-up…

Some of you may recall that we partnered with EE for a year when we were just getting into Fair Trade coffee back in 2003.  For the next three years, we worked separately, but always shared the same goals of empowering consumers in the United States to align their consumption with their values and empowering small-scale farmers overseas to take greater control of their lives.  At certain points, as I wrote above, this common concern led to informal collaboration.  Today, both our organizations realize that we can make more progress toward these goals together than apart.

We are very pleased that next month Equal Exchange will become the 17th Fair Trade company participating in our Coffee Program!  Visit our Coffee Map to see the full list of Coffee Program partners, and check back in October after we put EE on the map!
