Fair Trade Joe. Go Sisters, Go!

Just got this note this morning from the Sisters of St. Joseph, an inspiring order of religious women based in Pennsylvania:

“The Sisters of St. Joseph are now serving Fair Trade tea and coffee in their Motherhouse Dining Room in Baden, Pa.

This effort is an extension of the sisters’ commitment to ‘build sustainable communities.’ The 239-member Congregation is developing strategies for using their resources to better serve people suffering from social injustices, advocating for just and sustainable development throughout the world, and enhancing relationships among diverse cultures and countries. The sisters have supported local farmers in food purchases for their meals and established vegetable gardens and bee hives on their property as food sources.

The Baden Congregation is part of the 14,000-member International Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, which represents 55 countries.”

Thank you for the note, Barbara, and sincere thanks to the entire congregation for its leadership on the issues of Fair Trade and sustainable food–you are an inspiration and your commitment represents the very best of our tradition. Thank you!

   Hey CRS Fair Traders, this is terrific! SO glad to see such wonderful work is happening…keep it up, and maybe more religious congregations will take the lead of the St. Joe’s sisters!
