How will you express Deus Caritas Est this St. Valentine’s Day?

Last year, Pope Benedict released an influential document entitled “God is Love” or, for those of you who actually made it through Latin class, “Deus Caritas Est.” With St. Valentine’s Day approaching, many of us turn our thoughts to romantic or friendly love, but with Fair Trade there are always ways to transform holidays into economic justice opportunities. Please use this blog to share what YOU are doing to promote the principles of love through Fair Trade this season.

Here’s a photo of two young Fair Traders in Madison, WI promoting chocolate.

For example, in the Philadelphia area, Yadi and Trisha, two of our Ambassadors from Cabrini College are sharing ideas with student leaders at Villanova to promote products such as Divine chocolate and Fair Trade flowers. The month is full for the students, because Cabini is also holding their 2nd Annual “Play Fair Trade Fair” Walleyball tournament February 27th from 3:30-5:30, using socially responsible sports equipment from Fair Trade Sports.

John Carroll University (JCU) hosted a Valentine’s Day Fair Trade Roses Fundraiser. After receiving a grant from Transfair USA, JCU purchased Fair Trade Roses from a flower cooperative in Kenya. JCU students sold roses on Valentine’s Day in the university’s student center and worked to raise awareness about Fair Trade as well as raising funds for JCU students embarking on immersion experiences to Ecuador and Jamaica.
