Lots of our time on this trip is spent in 4WD vehicles traveling from place to place, and we are not even reaching the remotest areas of Ghana where CRS works. The fact is, with the exception of cold showers and occasional electricity outages we are having a rather easy trip, all things considered. Each evening we have our choice of rice, guinea fowl, mutton, cassava, and local Star beer to fill our bellies. One night we even had a virtual feast as the guests of Msgr. Roger Aboteyuure at a lodge near the Kongo Spiritual Renewal Center, which Father Roger established with help from Catholics in Canada and the United States.

But road trips can be long and our host, guide, and hero Thomas Awiapo tries to keep us entertained with stories. He recounted at one point how when he was visiting Cabrini College the students introduced him to the wonders of “Google Earth.” The students helped him navigate to see a shot of Cabrini in Pennsylvania, then he searched for Africa, to find the huge and diverse continent. He honed in on Ghana to see a lovely view of his country. Then he typed in the name of his home village, Wiaga-Yisobo. He waited a few moments and the message that popped up was “Results Not Found.” Thomas is a funny, joyful man, but you could see it was unsettling for him to recount that his village was missed and unknown.

Although we are not able to visit Wiaga-Yisobo, the delegates on this trip, as they meet students, HIV survivors, clergymen, and hotel staff, seem to grow each day in their commitment to take action when they return home. They want to make sure that Ghana and its people are not anonymous and that results of CRS work will be shared, if not through an internet search engine, than through their personal testimonies and memories.
